Prepare to celebrate the Canthan New Year in Guild Wars

      It's time to celebrate the new year! What, why are you rolling your eyes and saying that happened weeks ago? This is the Canthan New Year we're talking about in Guild Wars, a chance for Canthan citizens and less-fortunate Tyrian adventurers to take part in games and festivities while hoping to please the celestial animals for a fortunate new year.      This year's festival starts at 3:00 p.m. EST on January 31st and runs through February 7th, the start of a new policy for the game that will keep all events running for at least a week on fixed dates every year. Players will be able to aid in the preparation of the celestial animal feast, have their fortunes read, and play games on the Shing Jea Board walk. There will also be racing events in the Roller beetle Racing Arena and combat events in the Dragon Arena if you prefer. And there are special minipets to unlock as well as the promise of a mystery reward if the Celestial Animals are pleased with their meal. Why I Play: Vindictus

      I've noticed a curious trend among the Massively staff when it comes to the Why I Play column: The writers here tend to choose games you wouldn't necessarily expect them to choose. MJ Guthrie, who is the wind beneath our Wings Over Atreia, wrote about why she plays the Secret World. Patrick Mackey, our former Champions Online caped crusader and lately our League of Legends legend, wrote about why he plays Global Agenda. Shawn Schuster, our boss-in-chief, wrote about the little MMO that could, WURM Online. Jef Rea hard, our stalwart sandbox supporter, wrote about Lord of the Rings Online. And Larry Everett, our Jedi master, wrote about, well, Star Wars The Old Republic, but my point is that the Why I Play column seems to be a place for us to write about the games we play when we're not "gaming."

     That brings me to my choice for this week: Vindictus. Each week, I express my fondness for RIFT, Ever Quest II, and various kid-friendly MMOs, but about a year ago, I began to do an MMO walkabout and sampled a bunch of games, many of which I lives treamed with Massively's Jeremy Stratton. I really enjoyed most of the MMOs we played, but one that stood out for me was Vindictus. There's something about the game that makes it my favourite game away from gaming, and I'll attempt to explain why in this week's Why I Play.  buy or sell Vindictus items

DOFUS : Quirky and Charmingly Fun to Play

 

    Ankama Games' DOFUS has been one of those games that has quietly met with success over the years of its life, even spawning WAKFU recently.     I can't say enough about how impressive and charming are Dofus' visuals.  The game sports cute, colorful character models and environments that manage to be reminiscent of fantasy anime archetypes while still presenting a unique and distinct style.  I tend to be pretty glowy over Ankama Games' art styles across their various media, and while I know that the anime-inspired graphics aren't quite everyone's cup of tea, there can be no doubt that the attention to detail and lovingly crafted environments in Dofus are delightful.  The game's sounds and music are likewise nice, although there isn't any voice acting or range of crazy sound effects outside of the clamor of battle. Buy Runescape Items

    Dofus' music is just as charming as its visuals, and can be sometimes wistful, other times rousing, although the game could use a bit more variety here.
